Competencies

All Learn Everywhere certificates must be competency-based. This means that you shall award certificates not based on time or participation but on student mastery of a certain set of skills or competencies that you define. For each certificate which you propose to offer, please provide here a list of the competencies that students must master in order to achieve that certificate. Select competencies that describe what students will learn in your certificate program. For a ½-credit certificate, provide 3-5 competencies; for a 1-credit certificate, provide 5-10 competencies. Feel free to model your competencies on the examples given below, which are state-approved competencies drawn from the VLACS curriculum.

Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship

Student will demonstrate an understanding of the rights and responsibilities of citizenship by investigating the political processes and citizen involvement in local, state and national governments.

The Nature and Purpose of Government

Student will demonstrate an understanding of the nature and purpose of government and the fundamental ideals of the United States and New Hampshire governments by analyzing political philosophies outlined in the United States and New Hampshire constitutions and exploring how these are put into practice.

Structure and Function of Government

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the organization and operation of the United States and New Hampshire government at all levels including the legislative, executive, and judicial branches by analyzing relevant documents.

Foreign Policy

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the United States' role in world affairs by assessing foreign policy.

Criminal Justice and Law

Overview and History of the Criminal Justice System

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the criminal justice system and its history by describing an overview of the criminal justice system, the main parts of the criminal justice system, early crime and punishment, and modern crime and punishment.

Law and Crimes

Students will demonstrate an understanding of laws and crimes by describing types of laws and the jurisdiction of law, explaining how laws are made, and summarizing constitutional amendments, and elements and classifications of crimes.

Careers and the Courtroom

Students will demonstrate an understanding of criminal justice careers and the courtroom by identifying and describing career opportunities in the criminal justice system, the skills and duties to excel in these career opportunities, the courtroom and trial processes, and the roles of people involved in trial.

The Juvenile Justice System and Correctional Facilities

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the juvenile justice system and correctional facilities by describing the juvenile justice system, programs and agencies in juvenile justice, correctional systems, types of prisons and programs, and the responsibilities of correctional officers.

People Skills in Criminal Justice

Students will demonstrate an understanding of people skills in criminal justice by recognizing and describing personal traits that will help them succeed, applying strategies for conflict resolution and working well with others, and explaining employability skills.

Introduction to Criminology

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the foundations of the field of criminology by analyzing areas such as criminologists and criminalists.

Crime Theories

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the various crime theories by analyzing theories such as biological, psychological, social disorganization theory, strain theory, conflict theories, and radical criminology theories.

Crime Classifications

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the various categories of crime by analyzing crimes such as homicide, larceny, burglary, white-collar corporate and public order crimes.

Criminal Justice System

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the criminal justice system by analyzing processes such as its history, its goals, the stages of the criminal case process, the state and federal courts, and the death penalty.

Correctional System

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the correctional system by analyzing its components such as its history, its costs to society, punishments, probation, and alternative sanctions.

The Process and Ethics of Law

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the lawmaking process and ethical considerations by examining the elements of the lawmaking process in the US and and International Organizations, thereby analyzing the connections between the legal system, ethics and human rights.

The Criminal Justice System

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the multi-layered US criminal justice system by examining nuances and categories in the study of criminology, as well as, analyzing scenarios that highlight the factors associated with criminal behavior in society.

Consumer Law and Elements of Tort Law

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the validity, use and elements of tort law by evaluating and drawing conclusions of real life scenarios related to consumer law, consumerism and the changing landscape of economic activity.

Bill of Rights

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the history of individual rights in the United States by analyzing the Bill of Rights, its history and purpose and landmark cases associated with court interpretation.

Early Childhood Development

Childcare Roles, Obligations and Environment

Students will demonstrate an understanding of childcare roles, obligations and environment by explaining what early childhood education is, different family structures, safety needs, obligations that provider and parents must meet, and describing cultural differences and inclusion

Regulations and Strategies

Students will demonstrate an understanding of childcare regulations and strategies by explaining the legal requirements for meals, planning menus, positive mealtime strategies, and by describing the types and regulations of childcare facilities, signs and symptoms of child abuse, and how to disclose abuse.

Pregnancy, Childbirth and Early Childhood Development

Students will demonstrate an understanding of pregnancy, childbirth and early childhood development by explaining the stages of pregnancy, trimester characteristics, healthy prenatal care, and the stages of birth, and by describing the stages of early childhood development, benefits of breastfeeding, developmental milestones, and developmental delays.

Special Needs and Inclusivity

Students will demonstrate an understanding of special needs, and inclusivity by explaining special education history, infant and toddler needs, and inclusive classroom functions.

Setting Up Childcare Programs

Students will demonstrate an understanding of setting up childcare programs by describing the responsibilities of an early childhood entrepreneur including the legal business structure, business finances, marketing, advertising, and growth strategies.

Childhood Cognitive and Behavioral Development

Students will demonstrate an understanding of childhood cognitive and behavioral development by describing cognitive growth and development of play behaviors, types, benefits and integrating play, types of guidance for children, and by explaining when to intervene, strategies to create good behavior and self-esteem.

Observation, Communication and Record Keeping

Students will demonstrate an understanding of observation, communication and record keeping by describing the use of observations of children to improve care, developmentally appropriate communication, maintaining open communication with parents, and proper record keeping in a childcare setting.

Early Childhood Math and Language Literacy Skills

Students will demonstrate an understanding of early childhood math and language literacy skills by describing the development and use of language in young children, pre-literacy and pre-math skills, math skills development, and creating a supportive learning environment.

Early Childhood Curriculum and Methodology

Students will demonstrate an understanding of early childhood curriculum and methodology by describing components of pedagogy and popular curriculum models, explaining contemporary issues, and discussing age-appropriate use of technology, technology policies and tools for teachers.

The World of Parenting

Student will demonstrate the ability to describe the qualities that make a person a good candidate for parenthood by defining what it means to be a parent, examining the responsibilities, and analyzing parenting styles.

Self-Esteem and Child Development

Student will demonstrate the ability to promote the mental and emotional health of children by identifying characteristics of positive self-esteem, analyzing how various influences affect self-esteem, and explaining how parents can advocate for good social and academic self esteem.

Parent-Child Relationships

Students will demonstrate the ability to apply effective communication skills to positive parenting strategies by illustrating how communication can be used to support language development, build healthy parent-child relationships and work through difficult social situations.

Positive Parenting and Environments for Children

Student will demonstrate the ability to design a protective and nurturing environment for children at various ages by using positive parenting strategies to solve dilemmas, analyzing the causes and effects of stress in a parent’s life, and identifying the risk factors and types of abuse.

Distance, Blended, Personalized, and Adaptive Education

Students will demonstrate an understanding of different learning models by summarizing the history and software requirements of distance learning, differentiating between distance learning in higher ed, K12, and face-to-face environments, explaining blended, personalized, and adaptive learning, and comparing presentation methods in each model.

Technology in the Classroom

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the future of technology in the classroom by describing the applications, impact, benefits, and limitations of Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), robotics, and wearable technology in education and summarizing the career opportunities and pathways within AR, VR, and robotics.

Career Options and Future Application

Students will demonstrate an understanding of career options and future application of education by describing education requirements and career paths in a brick-and-mortar institution and how they differ from higher education, the impact of advances in technology on both brick and mortar and distance learning, the global impact of distance learning, and the impact of various learning modalities on the future of education.

What is Anthropology?

Students will demonstrate an understanding of anthropology by examining and explaining what an anthropologist does and the variety of subfields of anthropology.

Theory of Human Evolution

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the theory of human evolution by explaining the theory of evolution, the evolution process and describing the traits of our current species known as Homo Sapiens.

Looking at Culture in Societies

Students will demonstrate an understanding of a variety of societies studied by anthropologists by examining the defining characteristics of a variety of societies, such as hunter-gathers, nomads, pastorals, urban societies, industrial societies, and post-industrial societies.

Language, Environment and Culture

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between language, environment, and culture by comparing cultural similarities in language and describing ways the environment can affect culture.

Archaeology

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the process of archaeology by explaining the purpose of an archaeological record, the steps to discovering archaeological records at sites, and the variety of techniques used to analyze archaeological records.

Religion and Family in Culture

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the role of religion and family in culture by explaining the similarities and differences of a variety of religions and family practices in various cultures.

Enculturation

Students will demonstrate an understanding of how people are formed through enculturation by explaining how family, mainstream media and history have affected culture throughout the years.

Cultures in Modern Societies

Students will demonstrate an understanding of how cultures change as the world develops by explaining the role that genocide, human rights, and democracy played in developing today’s world.

Students will gain an understanding of Social Construction and Social Stratification by examining their role in patterns of group relations.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of different theories surrounding how to study and explain human behavior by identifying the role psychology plays in benefiting society and improving people's lives.

Developmental Psychology

Students will demonstrate the ability to analyze human growth and development by using developmental theories to explain the physical, cognitive, and social changes that occur throughout the life cycle.

Students will demonstrate the ability to apply principles of learning and memory by connecting these techniques to personal experiences and education.
