Competencies

All Learn Everywhere certificates must be competency-based. This means that you shall award certificates not based on time or participation but on student mastery of a certain set of skills or competencies that you define. For each certificate which you propose to offer, please provide here a list of the competencies that students must master in order to achieve that certificate. Select competencies that describe what students will learn in your certificate program. For a ½-credit certificate, provide 3-5 competencies; for a 1-credit certificate, provide 5-10 competencies. Feel free to model your competencies on the examples given below, which are state-approved competencies drawn from the VLACS curriculum.

Algebra

Exponential Functions

Students will demonstrate an understanding of exponential functions by applying analytical and graphical methods to simplify, solve and analyze problems involving exponents.

Inequalities

Students will demonstrate an understanding of inequalities by applying graphical and analytic methods to analyze and solve inequalities involving one or two variables.

Linear Functions

Students will demonstrate an understanding of linear functions by applying graphical and analytic methods to analyze and solve problems modeled by linear equations.

Polynomial Functions & Factoring

Students will demonstrate an understanding of polynomial functions and factoring by applying analytic methods to simplify, perform arithmetic operations, and solve problems.

Quadratic Functions

Students will demonstrate an understanding of quadratic functions by applying graphical and analytic methods to analyze and solve problems modeled by quadratic equations.

Systems of Equations

Students will demonstrate an understanding of systems of equations by applying graphical and analytic methods to analyze and solve systems of equations in two variables.

Radical Expressions

Students will demonstrate an understanding of radical expressions by simplifying radicals, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing radicals, simplifying expressions with rational exponents, simplifying complex numbers, and solving equations involving exponents and radicals.

Rational Expressions

Students demonstrate an understanding of rational expression by simplifying rational expressions using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and solving equations involving rational expressions.

Sequences and Series

Students will demonstrate their understanding of sequences and series by using formulas to evaluate specific terms in a sequence, determine a partial sum of a sequence, determine sum of infinite series, and apply the use of sequences and series to solve non-routine problems.

Geometry

Circles

Students will demonstrate an understanding of circles by reasoning with and applying theorems about circles.

Congruence

Students will demonstrate an understanding of congruence by proving geometric theorems and creating logical arguments about various geometric figures such as lines, triangles and parallelograms.

Expressing Geometric Properties with Equations

Students will demonstrate an understanding of geometric properties by using coordinates and applying algebraic models to express and prove geometric relationships.

Right Triangles and Trigonometry

Students will demonstrate an understanding of right triangles by reasoning to solve right triangles using various techniques including Pythagorean Theorem, trigonometric ratios, and special right triangle properties.

Rigid Motion

Students will demonstrate an understanding of rigid motions by analyzing various types of rigid motions and congruence in terms of rigid motion.

Similarity

Students will demonstrate an understanding of similarity through working with dilations, similar polygons, similar triangles, and proofs of similarity and using the concepts of congruence and similarity to solve real-world problems.

Solid Geometry

Students will demonstrate an understanding of solid geometry by calculating volume of various solid figures, problem solving, and visualizing the relationship between two and three dimensional figures.

Statistics

Introduction to Statistics

Students will demonstrate an understanding of statistical concepts by examining data types, using measures of central tendency and variation, and interpreting graphs for items such as categorical trends, statistical evaluations, and quantitative measurements.

Surveys and Sample Sets

Students will demonstrate an understanding of surveys and sample sets by evaluating sampling methods, sampling bias, and sampling errors.

Experimental and Observational Studies

Students will demonstrate an understanding of experimental and observational studies by evaluating the relationship between variables, designing an experiment or an observational study to investigate variables, and analyzing the statistical data generated by the investigation of the variables.

Rules of Probability

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the rules of probability by applying the rules of probability to solve problems, evaluating independent and mutually exclusive events, and performing statistical evaluations of probability data.

Simulations

Students will demonstrate an understanding of simulated data collection by completing a simulation where they identifying a problem, evaluating the assumptions, analyzing the process, and summarizing the conclusions.
