All Learn Everywhere certificates must be competency-based. This means that you shall award certificates not based on time or participation but on student mastery of a certain set of skills or competencies that you define. For each certificate which you propose to offer, please provide here a list of the competencies that students must master in order to achieve that certificate. Select competencies that describe what students will learn in your certificate program. For a ½-credit certificate, provide 3-5 competencies; for a 1-credit certificate, provide 5-10 competencies. Feel free to model your competencies on the examples given below, which are state-approved competencies drawn from the VLACS curriculum.

Irregular verbs hay, ser, tener, ir, estar and irregular yo verbs

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the use of irregular verbs including HAY, SER, TENER, IR, ESTAR and verbs with irregular conjugations in the ‘yo’ form by communicating in written and spoken Spanish on topics such as the home and household chores.

GUSTAR, plural verb conjugations, possessive adjectives

Students will demonstrate an understanding of GUSTAR, verb conjugations with plural subject pronouns, and possessive and descriptive adjectives by communicating in written and spoken Spanish on topics such as family, nationalities, occupations.

Stem-changing verbs, weather, adverbs of frequency

Students will demonstrate an understanding of stem-changing verbs, weather expressions and seasons, and adverbs of frequency by communicating in written and spoken Spanish on topics such as pastimes and activities.

SER vs. ESTAR, SABER vs. CONOCER, future with IR

Students will demonstrate an understanding of how and when to use SER vs. ESTAR, SABER vs. CONOCER, and the future with IR + a + infinitive by communicating in written and spoken Spanish on topics such descriptions and attractions of cities and the countryside.

Regular, Irregular, and Reflexive verbs in the present tense

Students will demonstrate an understanding of reflexive, regular and irregular verbs in the present tense, including “Yo-go” verbs and stem-changers by using these to communicate in written and spoken Spanish on topics such as body parts, clothing, and daily routines.

Object Pronouns, Tener que, Acabar de, and Estar + Prepositions

Students will demonstrate an understanding of direct and indirect object pronouns, the tener que and acabar de structures, and comparatives by using these to communicate in written and spoken Spanish on topics such as the community, parts of a car, errands, directions, careers, and volunteering.

Preterite Tense

Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to conjugate and when to use the preterite tense with regular and irregular verbs including ser, estar, tener, hacer, and ir by using these to communicate in written and spoken Spanish on topics such as illness, injuries, and visits to medical offices.

Commands

Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to form and when to use formal and informal, singular and plural, and affirmative and negative commands by using these to communicate in written and spoken Spanish on topics such as health and how to stay healthy.

Imperfect Tense, Demonstrative and Superlative Adjectives

Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to conjugate and when to use the imperfect tense (including irregulars) as well as demonstrative and superlative adjectives by using these to communicate in written and spoken Spanish on topics such as childhood stories, music toys, and games in the Spanish speaking world.

Imperfect vs. Preterite

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the imperfect vs. preterite tenses, including when to use each, stem-changing verbs in the preterite, and verbs that change meaning in the preterite and imperfect by using these to communicate in written and spoken Spanish on topics such as vacations.

Future tense and Saber vs. Conocer

Students will demonstrate an understanding of when and how to use the future tense as well as the use of saber vs. conocer by using these to communicate in written and spoken Spanish on topics such as natural disasters and environmental protection.

Present and Past Progressive

Students will demonstrate an understanding of when and how to use the present and past progressive tenses by using these to communicate in written and spoken Spanish on topics such as endangered, wild, and ocean animals.

Preterit vs Imperfect, Saber vs. Conocer, Relative Pronouns

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the preterit vs. imperfect including changes in the preterit, SABER vs. CONOCER, and relative pronouns by communicating in written and spoken Spanish on topics related to Spanish speaking cultural groups in the US such as community, immigration, jobs, and government.

Future, Ser and Estar, Present Progressive and Reflexive Actions

Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to discuss events in the future, SER and ESTAR, the present progressive tense, and reciprocal and reflexive actions by communicating in written and spoken Spanish on topics related to travel such as safe travel and planning a trip.

Formal and Informal Commands, Por vs Para

Students will demonstrate an understanding of formal and informal commands and por vs. para by communicating in written and spoken Spanish on topics related to travel such as being a global citizen and global etiquette.

Impersonal and Passive Voices with SE, Present and Future Perfect Tenses, GUSTAR-like verbs

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the impersonal and passive voices with SE, the present and future perfect tenses, and GUSTAR-like verbs by communicating in written and spoken Spanish on topics related to lifestyles and celebrations in Spanish speaking countries such as transportation, hospitality, and idioms and slang.

Subjunctive Mood, Conditional Tense, Prepositions

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the subjunctive mood with impersonal expressions, wishes, requests, desires, doubts; the conditional tense; and prepositions of location by communicating in written and spoken Spanish on topics related to art and artists from the Spanish speaking world such as careers related to art, artwork, forms of art, and personal experiences.

Subjunctive vs. Indicative, Passive Voice

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the subjunctive vs. indicative moods, including irregular conjugations and use with adverbial clauses, and the passive voice with SER and the past participle by communicating in written and spoken Spanish on topics related to social issues in Mexico and Central America such as Mexican and Central American literature, authors, and themes.

Subjunctive and Conditional Tense

Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to use the subjunctive with impersonal expressions, phrases of volition, fear and doubt, and conjunctions; and the conditional tense by communicating in written and spoken Spanish on topics related to global health issues such as health and nutrition, environmental challenges, and human rights.

Subjunctive with Irregular Verbs, Present Perfect, and actions not yet completed, Future Perfect

Students will demonstrate an understanding of irregular verbs in the subjunctive, the present perfect subjunctive, and how the subjunctive is used with actions not yet completed as well as the future perfect by communicating in written and spoken Spanish on topics related to global inventions such as current research and future technologies, modern communication, and global social media influence.

Possessive Pronouns, Embellished Adjectives, Nouns formed from Verbs

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the possessive pronouns, embellished adjectives, and nouns formed from verbs by communicating in written and spoken Spanish on topics related to relationships across cultures such as roles, values, family structures and childhood/adolescence in various cultures.

Accidental SE, Double Object Pronouns, Imperfect and Past Perfect Subjunctive

Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to use the accidental SE, double object pronouns in a simple to complex sentences, and the subjunctive with the imperfect and past perfect by communicating in written and spoken Spanish on topics related to contemporary life across cultures such as celebrated events, international travel, and post-secondary education.

Demonstrative Adjectives & Pronouns, Expressions of Time, Passive Voice

Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to use demonstrative adjectives and pronouns in simple and complex sentences, expressions of time with the past tense, and the passive voice by communicating in written and spoken Spanish on topics related to aspects of beauty across cultures such as perceptions of beauty in architecture, visual arts, literature, and performing arts.

Chinese

Pronouns and Sentence Structure

Students will demonstrate an understanding of pronouns and basic sentence structure in Chinese by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as geographical place of origin and personal information about self and others.

Use of 有 and 还有

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the Chinese verb 有 (to have) and the conjunctive adverb 还有 (and also have) by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as family, age, and numbers to 100.

Interrogative Adjectives and Prepositions

Students will demonstrate an understanding of Chinese interrogative adjectives who, what, and where and the use of the preposition 在 (in, at, on) by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as friends, pets, addresses, and numbers to 1000.

Time and Date

Students will demonstrate an understanding of time, dates, and sentence structure when referencing time by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as the date, time, daily schedule, and school.

Use of 会 and 还是 and Measure Words

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the use of the verb 会 (be able to, can), 还是 to form alternative questions and express “had better,”, and measure words by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as food, clothing, likes, and dislikes.

Verb + 不 + verb and 妈 Questions and Preposition 向

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the verb + 不 + verb and 吗 question (yes/no) forms and the preposition 向 (toward) by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as hobbies, sports, and directions.

Superlatives and Use of 过

Students will demonstrate an understanding of superlative formation and the use of 过 to express that an action or event has been experienced by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as arts, entertainment, and colors.

Two Uses of 的

Students will demonstrate an understanding of two uses of 的 to form possession and adjectives by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as household appliances, ownership, and price.

Schedules, Conjunctive Adverbs, and Ordinal Numbers

Students will demonstrate an understanding of conjunctive adverbs to connect events and ordinal numbers by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as the American and Chinese school day.

Capability ( 能 ,会), Suggestions, Present Progressive (正在)

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the uses and differences between 能 and 会 to express capability and the use of 正在 to describe an event in progress by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as sports, health, fitness, and personal opinions and suggestions.

Time Adverbs and Ability

Students will demonstrate an understanding of time adverbs to describe the present, past, and future and the verbs 懂，会，擅长，精通 to express ability and skill by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as careers and personal interests. Students will demonstrate an understanding of time adverbs to describe the present, past, and future and the verbs.

Making plans and directions

Students will demonstrate an understanding of asking for and giving help, clarification, and directions by communicating i n written and spoken Chinese on topics such as making plans, travel in China, and Chinese geography.

Mood and Simile

Students will demonstrate an understanding of Chinese simile formation using 如，像。。。一样，and 仿佛 and the use of use modal particles to express agreement, doubt, and mood by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as modern and traditional Chinese architecture and gardens.

Sequencing and Qualifiers

Students will demonstrate an understanding of sequencing of events in Chinese and qualifiers (太, 可, 够, 非常, 十分, 很 ,真）to express degree by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as C hinese and Western holidays and celebrations.

Preference, Choice, Quantity

Students will demonstrate an understanding of preference and choice in Chinese and how to express size and quantity through correct measure word and adjective placement by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as ordering at a restaurant, shopping at a market, and attending a banquet.

Comparison, Degree, and Two Uses of 了

Students will demonstrate an understanding of comparisons and degree and the use of 了 to express simple past and duration by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as extended family members, Chinese arts and music.

Family Structure and Expressions of Love

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the Chinese family descriptive system and idiomatic expressions of love and dating by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as extended family and comparisons of U.S. and Chinese dating customs.

Traditional Chinese Health and Medicine and Passive Voice

Students will demonstrate an understanding of traditional Chinese health and medicine and passive voice through preposition usage by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as acupuncture, the concepts of Yin and Yang, illness, and injury.

Chinese Poetry and Folk Songs

Students will demonstrate an understanding Chinese poetry and folk songs by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as the poetry of Li Bai, Du Fu, and Li Qing Zhao, the Da You, Dui Ou, and Dui Zhang poetry forms, and comparison of poetry to Chinese folk songs.

Talents and Goals

Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to describe talents and goals using adverbs of degree by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as plans for after high school, U.S. and Chinese university admissions and student life, and parental influence on decision making.

Persuasive Writing and Speaking: Environmental Protection

Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to write and speak persuasively in Chinese by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as protection of pandas in China and comparisons of environmental protection and conservation efforts in the US and China.

Formal and Informal Language

Students will demonstrate an understanding of Chinese formal and informal language by communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as pop culture, entertainment, and the U.S. and Chinese economies.

Latin

Case usage, imperfect and future tense

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the genitive, dative and ablative case uses by differentiating their uses in sentences and interpreting Latin in sentences and short stories

First Declension, First Conjugation, Sum

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the first declension, the first conjugation, case uses, and the present tense of sum by analyzing noun and verb forms and translating sentences and short stories.

Fourth Conjugation verbs, personal pronouns

Students will demonstrate an understanding of personal pronouns, fourth conjugation active and passive voice in all 6 tenses by comparing the formation of all tenses among the first, second and third conjugations and analyzing verb and pronoun forms in sentences and short stories.

Imperfect, future tense of 1st conjugation verbs, sum

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the imperfect and future tenses of 1st conjugation verbs and the irregular verb sum by comparing the differences in the formation and translation of the different verb tenses and by analyzing Latin in sentences and short stories.

Passive voice, ablative of agent, er adjectives, adverbs

Students will demonstrate mastery of passive in the present, imperfect and future tenses, ablative of agent, adjectives and adverbs by creating verb and adjective forms, interpreting and translating nouns and verbs in sentences from Latin to English and English to Latin.

Passive voice perfect system, connectors, appositives, idioms

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the passive perfect system, appositives, connectors and idioms by analyzing nouns and their case uses in a short story, answering comprehension questions on short stories, and connecting Latin verb forms with their English forms.

Second conjugation, infinitives, adjectives, Roman numerals

Students will demonstrate an understanding of Roman numerals, adjectives and verbs in the 2nd conjugation in all 6 tenses and infinitives by comparing verb tense formation in the 2nd conjugation with verbs in the 1st conjugation and interpreting verb forms and adjectives in sentences and short stories.

Third conjugation verbs

Students will demonstrate an understanding of third conjugation active and passive voice in all 6 tenses by comparing the formation of all tenses among the first, second and third conjugations and analyzing verb forms in sentences and short stories.

Vocative case, imperative mood, 2nd declension, perfect tense, ablative of means

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the 2nd declension masculine and neuter with a focus on the vocative and ablative case uses and an understanding of the perfect tense and imperative mood by analyzing and interpreting verb and nouns forms in sentences and short passages.

Third Declension, Relative and Interrogative pronouns

Students will demonstrate an understanding of third declension, relative and interrogative pronouns through translations and use of appropriate pronouns based on context.

Third Declension Neuter, I Stem, Sum, Possum

Students will demonstrate an understanding of third declension neuter, third declension i stem, sum and possum by analyzing and translating nouns and verbs in sentences.

Third Declension Adjectives, Demonstratives

Students will demonstrate a knowledge of third declension adjectives and demonstratives pronouns and adjectives through the interpretation of these forms in Latin sentences.

Ablative Absolute, Future Participles, Reflexive, Fourth and Fifth Declensions

Students will demonstrate a knowledge of ablative absolute, future participles, reflexive pronouns and adjectives, and fourth and fifth declensions by comparing their forms and translation in sentences.

Participles and Infinitives

Students will demonstrate a knowledge of participles and infinitives by comparing their forms and translation in sentences.

Indirect Statement

Students will demonstrate a knowledge of indirect statement by analyzing noun syntax and verb tense to form indirect statement in Latin.

Comparison of Adjectives and Adverbs

Students will demonstrate a knowledge of the comparison of regular and irregular adjectives and adverbs by analyzing the adjective and adverb forms and interpreting them in sentences.

Gerunds and Gerundives

Students will demonstrate an understanding of gerunds and gerundives by analyzing and interpreting verbal forms in sentences and passages by Roman authors such as Julius Caesar.

Deponent Verbs and Irregular Verbs

Students will demonstrate an understanding of deponent verbs and irregular verbs such as eo and volo by analyzing and interpreting verbal forms in sentences and passages by Roman authors such as Julius Caesar.

Subjunctive forms and its use

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the subjunctive forms and its uses in independent and dependent clauses by translating the subjunctive in original works by authors such as Cicero.

Latin Orations

Students will demonstrate an understanding of Latin orations and stylistic devices used in persuasive speeches by analyzing the orations by authors such as Cicero.

Poetry, Meter, Stylistic Devices

Students will demonstrate an understanding of Latin poetry by interpreting original works and analyzing the meter, stylistic devices, grammatical structures and purpose in poetry by authors such Ovid and Gaius Valerius Catullus

Analysis of Latin literature

Students will demonstrate an understanding of Latin literature by analyzing, translating and reading aloud original works such as Vergil’s Book 1 Aeneid.

French

Introductions, Cognates, Parts of Speech, Numbers to 10

Students will demonstrate an understanding of cognates and parts of speech including singular and plural pronouns, nouns, definite and indefinite articles, and formal and informal pronouns, and numbers through 10 by exchanging information in written and spoken French on topics such as introductions and the French speaking world.

Expressing Likes and Dislikes, Subject Pronouns and Numbers to 70

Students will demonstrate the ability to express likes and dislikes and an understanding of subject pronouns and numbers through 70 by exchange information in written and spoken French on topics such as the date, time, and seasons.

Verb ÊTRE, Plural Nouns, Questions, Negative Constructions, Adjective Agreement

Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to form and use the verb ÊTRE, plural nouns, questions and negative constructions, and adjective agreement by comprehending and communicating in written and spoken French on topics such as family.

Verb ALLER, Positional Prepositions, Types of Adjectives, the French Number System

Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to form and use the verb ALLER, positional prepositions to answer the question « Où...? » , regular, irregular and possessive adjectives, and the French number system by comprehending and communicating in written and spoken French on topics such as school.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of various past tenses including plus que parfait and passé simple by communicating information about past events in written and spoken French about cultural and community-related information such as great figures in Francophone history.

Expressions of Indefinite Quantity, Causative form of FAIRE

Students will demonstrate an understanding of expressions of indefinite quantity and the causative form of the verb FAIRE by using each to communicate in written and spoken French while discussing cultural and community-related information such as transportation, holidays and getting things done.

Futur Simple and Conditionnel Verb Forms

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the futur simple and the conditionnel verb forms by using conjunctions of time and 'si clauses' to communicate future actions and hypothetical statements in French to discuss cultural and community related information such as college and career opportunities and future planning.

Present Subjunctive Mood with Impersonal Expressions

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the present subjunctive mood by using impersonal expressions and the present subjunctive verb forms to discuss cultural and community information related to needs and obligations on topics such as health, body parts and medical terms in written and spoken French.

Past Conditional Mood, Passive Voice, and Relative Pronouns

Students will demonstrate an understanding of verbs in the past conditional mood, the passive voice and relative pronouns by using each to discuss cultural and community-related information such as Francophone theatre, cinema, and music in written and spoken French.

Francophone Culture

Students will demonstrate an understanding of Francophone culture by interpreting and expressing opinions on Francophone topics such as art and literature using comparative and superlative constructions, ordinal numbers, and a variety of verb tenses in written and spoken French.
