Competencies

All Learn Everywhere certificates must be competency-based. This means that you shall award certificates not based on time or participation but on student mastery of a certain set of skills or competencies that you define. For each certificate which you propose to offer, please provide here a list of the competencies that students must master in order to achieve that certificate. Select competencies that describe what students will learn in your certificate program. For a ½-credit certificate, provide 3-5 competencies; for a 1-credit certificate, provide 5-10 competencies. Feel free to model your competencies on the examples given below, which are state-approved competencies drawn from the VLACS curriculum.

Introduction to Engineering

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the field of engineering by describing engineering, its history and its impact on social, cultural, political, and economic landscapes throughout history, and explaining how and why technological development and diffusion have rapidly increased.

Electricity and Circuits

Students will demonstrate an understanding of electricity and circuits by summarizing the science of electricity, describing formulas and the application of electricity, explaining electronic calculations and components, and diagramming circuits.

Engineering Tools and Safety

Students will demonstrate an understanding of engineering tools and safety by describing tools and equipment used by engineers, identifying and utilizing the steps to the scientific method, and explaining safety protocols, rules and regulations found in a lab or workplace.

Engineering Design Process and Application

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the engineering design process and application by identifying and describing the steps in the engineering design process and explaining and applying engineering drawings, models and prototypes.

Engineering Fields

Students will demonstrate an understanding of various fields of engineering by explaining the development of various engineering fields, researching the current systems that each design, explaining the skills required for various engineering fields, and exploring potential growth within those fields.

History and Future of STEM

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the history of science, technology, and engineering by explaining ways in which their future trajectories differ and depend on one another.

Engineering Problem Solving and Design Process

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the engineering problem solving and design processes by explaining how the various engineering disciplines utilize these processes and systems and how the processes complement each other.

Ethics and Societal Considerations for Engineering

Students will demonstrate an understanding of ethics and societal concerns relating to the engineering process and workplace procedures by discussing positive and negative aspects of controversial topics such as genetic engineering, nuclear engineering and more.

Defining an Engineering Problem and Exploring Solutions

Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to define an engineering problem and explore solutions by researching and asking questions pertaining to the problem and utilizing a systematic approach to explore possible solutions to a task.

Designing an Engineering Solution

Students will demonstrate an understanding of solution design by creating an outline of a solution to a complex engineering problem that includes a breakdown of required tasks and strengths and potential pitfalls in solution.

Building a Prototype

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the process of and purpose for building a prototype by building a prototype to explore the strengths and weaknesses of a proposed solution.

Refining an Engineering Solution: Test, Reflect, and Revise

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the process used to test and improve a product by completing the process of testing, reflecting and revising a product to better perform desired tasks.

Evaluating Our Transportation

Students will demonstrate an understanding of our current transportation systems by evaluating our current transportation modes and their limitations and disadvantages, future modes of transportation, the new technology evaluation process, and the technology adoption curve.

Flying Cars, Self-Driving Cars and Society

Students will demonstrate an understanding of flying cars and self-driving cars and their impact on society by explaining flying and autonomous vehicles, the pros and cons of flying cars, the levels of autonomous driving, driving features, technologies and algorithms, the risks and benefits of human-driven cars and self driving cars, ethical dilemmas, acceptance in society, and careers in the industry.

Drones, Hyperloop, Jetpacks

Students will demonstrate an understanding of drones, hyperloop, and jetpacks by analyzing careers in the industry, the historical developments, advances, safety risks, and impact of drones on jobs.

Supersonic Jets, Personal Rapid Transit, Supercavitation

Students will demonstrate an understanding of supersonic jets, personal rapid transit, and supercavitation by analyzing their function, adoption in society, the pros and cons of each, jet systems, rapid transit systems, supersonic designs, and careers in the industry.

Space Travel, Interstellar Travel

Students will demonstrate an understanding of space and interstellar travel by describing space exploration and it’s costs and benefits, careers in space travel, the use of rockets, challenges of reusable rockets, and by describing the feasibility, pros and cons, and theories of interstellar travel.

Introduction to Wearable Technologies

Students will demonstrate an understanding of wearable technology by examining the ethics surrounding the use of the different types of wearable devices, summarizing the history of the wearable device, explaining the components of wearable devices, and explaining the role the battery plays in a wearable device.

Designing Wearables

Students will demonstrate an understanding of product design of wearables by explaining the operating system and key technologies integrated into wearable devices, describing the development process and design considerations for wearable technologies, and describing potential career opportunities within wearable technology development.

Wearable Technologies in Healthcare, Fitness, and Sports

Students will demonstrate an understanding of wearable technologies in the healthcare, fitness, and sports industries by examining the applications used in these industries, describing the smartwatch, assessing the risks and benefits of utilizing wearable technologies in these industries, and identifying wearable technologies career opportunities within the healthcare, fitness and sports industries.

Wearable Technologies in Public Safety, Military, and Fashion

Students will demonstrate an understanding of wearable technologies in the public safety, military, and fashion industries by examining the application and use of wearable technologies within these industries, assessing the risks and benefits of wearable technologies in the military, and describing wearable technologies career opportunities in the fashion industry.

Wearable Technologies in Education and Business

Students will demonstrate an understanding of wearable technologies in education and business by examining the applications and use of wearable technologies in the fields, assessing the benefits and risks of using wearable technologies in these fields, and describing wearable technology career opportunities in business.

Space Travel

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the future of space travel by summarizing the history of the United States space exploration, describing the impact of politics and the international community on our space program, and explaining the advancements, goals, and plans for future space travel.

Colonizing the Moon and Mars

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the colonization of the Moon and Mars by summarizing the geographical features that make a base on the moon and mars advantageous, describing the physiological requirements for residents of the Moon or Mars, the evidence of Mars’ ability to sustain life, and the infrastructure required to support life, and assessing the political implications, future benefits, and potential impact of colonizing the Moon and Mars.

Space Resources

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the space resources by describing the asteroid mining industry, summarizing the expansion of space exploration, and assessing current travel capabilities and the ability to meet future needs.

Space as a Battle Ground

Students will demonstrate an understanding of space as a battleground by summarizing the Outer Space Treaty and the existing legislation to prevent military conflicts in space, describing the plans to develop a Space Force military branch, evaluating the efforts of other governments to build capabilities for waging war and the impact of potential conflict, and assessing the use of robots in space for military and exploratory purposes.

Spacecraft Design and Interstellar Travel

Students will demonstrate an understanding of spacecraft design and interstellar travel by summarizing the current spacecraft design and technology considerations, comparing historical and current spacecraft design to future design, explaining the motivation behind interstellar travel, and describing the theories that would allow for interstellar travel.

Robotics Engineering

Students will demonstrate an understanding of engineering concepts by using mechanical and electrical engineering concepts and techniques to design and build robots to complete various challenges.

Programming

Students will demonstrate an understanding of Python programming by writing, uploading, and testing Python code to have a robot accomplish various tasks.

Problem Solving

Students will demonstrate an understanding of problem solving by describing problem identification, engineering tasks, and identifying solutions.

Robot Testing

Students will demonstrate an understanding of robot testing by designing a field test, testing the robot, recording findings, and making necessary adjustments to the robot.

The Robotics Industry

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the robotics industry by explaining the basics of robotics; describing careers, educational requirements, and skills in robotics and engineering; and explaining safety standards and procedures.

Machines and Modeling

Students will demonstrate an understanding of machines and modeling by explaining simple machines, tools and modeling techniques, the process of sketches to prototypes, and mechanical systems and energy.

Robotic Motion, Mechanics and Physics

Students will demonstrate an understanding of robotic motion, mechanics and physics by describing the elements and applications of robotic mechanisms, dynamics, linear and angular kinematics, and inertia and momentum.

Engineering Design and Robotics Systems

Students will demonstrate an understanding of engineering design and robotics systems by describing and applying the engineering design process, explaining the process of creating prototypes, and explaining the importance of teamwork and critical thinking skills in engineering and robotics.

Forensic Science

Arson and Explosives Evidence

Student will discuss the strategies and prove the difficulties associated with arson- and explosion-based crime scene investigations, evidence collection, and analysis as well as compare the various incendiary materials and devices.

Collecting and Analyzing Physical Evidence

Student will differentiate between the various types and categories of physical evidence, illustrate the methodologies for evidence analysis, and apprise how their analysis can influence criminal investigations.

Firearms and Tool Marks

Student will connect the collection and analysis of firearm and tool mark evidence to an investigators capacity to draw conclusions about the origin of evidence and its role in the commission of a crime.

Forensic Science and Crime Scene Analysis

Student will demonstrate a capacity to assess a crime scene for critical evidence, apply the appropriate procedures for recognition, collection, cataloging, and preservation of evidence, and describe and illustrate the specialized disciplines in forensics and their application to the field of forensic science.

Chemical Evidence: Collection and Testing

Students will explain how forensic scientists can capitalize on the atomic composition of evidence in order to enable analysis; students will describe instrumentation necessary for evidence testing.

Digital Evidence and Cybersecurity

Students will discuss the strategies used by cybercriminals to commit crime and describe how forensic scientists uncover and investigate such crimes now and how predicted advancements will lead to new investigative techniques and testing.

Document Examination and Evaluation

Students will discuss how suspect documents are evaluated and verified and will demonstrate an understanding of testing strategies and tools utilized in record examination

Drugs and Toxins: Evidence Collection and Testing

Students will differentiate between types of recreational drugs and toxins and discuss their effects on a human body. Further, students will explain analysis of evidence, and collection and testing strategies to screen for these forms of evidence.

Biotechnology

Ancient Biotechnology

Students will demonstrate an understanding of Ancient Biotechnology by defining the term and explaining how the shift to agriculture in Neolithic Period sparked humanity's first biotechnological innovations.

Classical Biotechnology

Students will demonstrate an understanding of classical biotechnology by describing early biotechnological innovations and explaining how key historical events spurred growth in the field.

Biotechnology Regulation

Students will demonstrate an understanding of biotechnology regulation by identifying major regulatory agencies in the United States and explaining how and why these agencies hold a balance between regulation and innovation in biotech product development.

Biotechnology Today

Students will demonstrate an understanding of biotechnology today by describing recent major advances in 3 key areas of Biotechnology: medicine, agriculture, and industry and discussing the social and economic impacts of these innovations.

Veterinary Science

Exotic animal medicine

The student will demonstrate understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities of exotic animal medicine by comparing avian and reptilian diseases and treatments, and by analyzing considerations required by captivity in zoos and animal parks.

Holistic veterinary medicine

The student will demonstrate understanding of non-traditional veterinary methods by examining a variety of holistic techniques and approaches used to treat common physical disorders of domestic animals and livestock, and identifying potential benefits and disadvantages of these treatments.

Large and small animal medicine

The student will demonstrate understanding of common diseases, disorders, and treatments of companion animals and livestock by comparing basic physiology, investigating impacts on humans and food supply, and analyzing causes, solutions, and prevention methods.

Origin and application of veterinary science

The student will demonstrate understanding of the history, evolution, and scope of veterinary science by differentiating between historical, current, and potential applications of the science, as well as identifying the education and skills required to practice veterinary medicine.

Poisoning, toxicology, and parasitology

The student will demonstrate an understanding of toxicology and parasitology by a comparative analysis of transmission or access mechanisms, symptoms presented, treatments prescribed, and prevention methods.

Zoonotic diseases

The student will demonstrate understanding of the threat of diseases transferred between animals and humans by identifying potential sources, transmission mechanisms, and historical evidence, and assessing modern research efforts, eradication techniques, and preventative measures.
